Company Introduction

Stadtwerke Osnabrück is a modern municipal utility company providing reliable energy, water, mobility, and digital services for the city of Osnabrück and the surrounding region. Guided by a clear mission statement, the company is committed to shaping the future through sustainable infrastructure development, forward-looking concepts for quality of life, and dynamic corporate development. With a strong focus on customer centricity, sustainability and security of supply, Stadtwerke Osnabrück plays a central role in enhancing quality of life for people and nature in the region.

To live up to this ambition, Stadtwerke Osnabrück continuously invests in the digitalization and optimization of its business processes. By leveraging Process Intelligence technology, the company turns data into action, and systematically unlocks improvement potential, supporting data-driven decisions that enable efficient, customer-focused operations and a sustainable, future-oriented organization.

Initial Situation: Limited Transparency in a Complex Process Landscape

At the start of the project, the Receivables Management process at Stadtwerke Osnabrück was characterized by a highly complex process landscape. Numerous manual activities took place outside the SAP IS-U core system, resulting in limited transparency and inconsistent execution. As a consequence, inefficiencies accumulated over time, and risks increased, particularly with regard to the planned S/4HANA migration. The organization aimed towards a reliable, data-driven foundation to fully analyze the process and systematically identify improvement potential.

From Activation to Value Realization

Together with Processand, Stadtwerke Osnabrück implemented a value-focused Process Intelligence App. The project started with the productive activation of an initial Celonis solution, including data validation, automation elements, and targeted extensions. In close collaboration, interdisciplinary teams conducted in-depth process analyses and derived concrete improvement measures directly from the data. A strong focus was placed on prioritizing use cases based on their financial impact and feasibility. In parallel, an initial operating model and collaboration setup were defined to ensure that identified value could be realized sustainably beyond the project phase.

Working towards a common goal

A key success factor was the close and trust-based collaboration between Business Experts, IT, and Processand. Rather than limiting the initiative to pure implementation, the project consistently followed a value-first mindset. Processand’s deep expertise in both process intelligence and the utilities industry enabled fast insights and pragmatic solutions.

At the same time, internal teams at Stadtwerke Osnabrück were enabled early on to actively work with Celonis themselves, building a starting point for long-term independence and scalability.

Setting the foundation for future Success

“Thanks to Processand, we were able to translate complex process data into clear management-relevant insights. The structured approach and deep Celonis expertise made the value potential visible and actionable very quickly.” says Oliver Weiß, Head of Market and Customer Processes.

With Celonis anchored in the organization, Stadtwerke Osnabrück is now well positioned to systematically expand Process Intelligence to additional use cases and processes. The established transparency and first steps towards a scalable operating mode provide a strong foundation for further automation, continuous improvement, and a risk-reduced S/4HANA migration.

In this way, the project directly supports the company’s long-term ambition to shape a sustainable and future-oriented infrastructure for the region.
